We don't keep any kind of soap in the bathtub. None of us use it. (The bathtub that is)

No. And there's nothing mouldy either.

We don't have a sink at the moment. Kitchen refit in progress.

I would have sealed the floor before laying the carpet, to stop the dust lines blowing up between the boards. And I would fit that cable tidy we bought 8 years ago, to tidy up the TV, PVR, PS3 and AV amplifier cables.

A stack of new oak flooring, the flooring man's tools and fixings, a door, quite a lot of sawdust.

Two in bathrooms (third bathroom yet to be kitted out), two on the study floor waiting to be hung.

No. Emergency money lives in the bank.

Which ones? We currently have walls in the following colours:
Plaster; Natural hessian; White; "Gentle" (a shade of lilac); "Armagnac" (a shade of aubergine); Peach; Brown (can't remember the name); Olde English Gold; Willow Tree (pale shade of sage green).
43. Which rooms in your house have wallpaper?
None.
44. Do you have a peephole in your front door?
No. Some stained glass though.
45. Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home?
A small baseball bat. Oh, and the old Kalashnikov, of course, but everyone has one of those.

Fly spray.

Sandalwood.

Mango chutney; branston pickle. Might be some old lime pickle in there at the back.

On here? In the house? We have a "family wall" with pics of, you know, family.

Well this will totally amaze my regular readers, but I don't have a favourite Bible. Or an unfavourite one come to that.

Not at the moment (see #4). Once the refit is complete there'll be LOADS.

I prefer them to colours made of, say, plasma.

Wallet, keys, and anyone who was in the house. I don't think I could carry the aquarium, so I hope the end will be quick for the fish :o(

Book meme revisited
Last time I did one of these was way back in May 2008. This one comes, via Diane, courtesy of the BBC, who believe "most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here." Which is very disdainful of them. Or are they just trying to make people feel better, in an age where - supposedly - fewer people are reading, and those who are, are reading less?
Anyway, the instructions say "Bold those books you've read in their entirety, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read an excerpt", so let's see how we get on. I've chosen to underline the ones I've read, rather than using bold. Bold formatting doesn't show up too well on this blog.

Eight of the best
Apparently I've garnered a bit of a reputation for meme-stealing. To which I would simply say... there are worse reputations to have :o)
Before I get started on that though, a word about my absence. Apparently it's been quiet on other blogs too. Maybe the post-Christmas blues got to everyone, or we all thought you could only have so much writing about snow or (as in my case) there simply wasn't much I felt worth writing about. Things have happened, but for the most part only mundane things, or things that will keep for another day. In short, I couldn't be arsed. However, there's nothing like a good meme to get one back into the swing of things and, as the old joke goes, this is nothing like a good meme ;o)

Year end meme
Snagged, as most of these things are (on my blog at least!) from Diane, this is probably the last chance I could have to answer some of the more Christmassy questions in this meme, and what better way to spend the last few moments of Christmas Morning before popping down to open our presents? :D
1. Was 2009 a good year for you?
It brought a lot of disappointment, and on the work front much stress, worry and confrontation which isn't over yet, but there were high points too. Not a "good" year, as such, and I'll be glad to see the back of it, but let's just say it could have been worse. We're still employed, healthy, and together which are the most important things (not necessarily in that order lol).
2. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Went on strike (and stood on the picket line). Wrote a radio play.
3. What was your favourite moment of the year?
The moment I learned a New York agent had requested my full manuscript.
4. What was your least favourite moment of the year?
The moment I learned the New York agent didn't want to pursue my full manuscript.
5. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make them.
6. What are your plans for 2010?
Trip to the Lakes in May, decorate our bedroom, write more!
7. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A cousin's son had a baby boy at the beginning of November. Several of the book club girls gave birth, although I'm not sure they qualify as "close" ;o)
8. Did anyone close to you die?
My uncle (and the last surviving of my Dad's brothers) died last month.
9. How many weddings did you go to?
None.

Umm... Wales?
11. What date in 2009 will remain etched in your memory?
The day I learned Shiny Media had filed for bankruptcy.
12. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Making the long list for the Alfred Bradley Bursary Award.
13. What was your biggest failure?
You've only failed when you give up trying. I haven't given up trying.
14. Did you suffer any illness or injury?
A few coughs and wheezes. Nothing serious.
15. What was the best thing you bought?
The biUbe aquarium for Nikki's main Christmas present.
16. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Friends and family have all had successes to celebrate during the year in some way.
17. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Our CEO. All our politicians, with their dodgy expenses. All world leaders, with their pathetic show at Copenhagen. Any Americans who voted against universal health care plans. Various groups of terrorists.

I wish I knew!

That request for a full. I literally jumped up and down.
20. What songs will always remind you of 2009?
Spin Doctor. The second song to be recorded for our second album - Weird & Wonderful - which will be released next year. It's about corrupt politicians and it sums up the year for me (even though it was written some time ago).

a) Fatter or thinner? Almost exactly the same
b) Happier or sadder? Probably the same there too.
c) Richer or poorer? I feel poorer, but I don't really know why!

Eating, drinking and being merry at home with Nikki, and friends, and (close) family.

May, definitely. The month we bought the bird feeder for the garden, did a lot of work to tidy the garden up, Natalie came to stay for several weeks' study leave, we endured - I mean enjoyed - Annie's birthday camping weekend near Buxton, went on the Gannet & Puffin cruise and to see the new Star Trek movie.
28. How did you see in the New Year?
Stayed in Chesterfield with mates and had a fantastic night playing daft games, exchanging secret Santa presents and watching indoor fireworks. Oh, and drinking.
29. What was your favourite TV show?
Really enjoyed Spooks this year (shown in North America as "MI5" I believe, owing to the negative racial connotation of the word 'spooks' over there).
30. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't hate anyone.
31. What was/were the best books you read?
The Runes of the Earth by Stephen Donaldson. First in the final Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever (to be a quadrilogy, apparently), always one of my most favourite series it was a delightful revelation to discover he'd picked up the story again.
32. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Not a new discovery, but I REdiscovered my love for Pink Floyd. I'd quite literally forgotten how good they were/are. Listened to their stuff a lot lately. King Crimson too, as it happens. Maybe it's been a year for musical nostalgia.
33. What did you want and get?
Can't think of anything that I wanted really badly apart from a writing contract, and that comes under...

A writing contract.

Watchmen. Visually stunning.
36. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
Well, not actually ON my birthday, but shortly before, Nikki treated me to a spa day at a nearby hotel complex. It were fab. I don't think I've ever been so relaxed. This year wasn't a milestone of any kind. Unless 53 has some special meaning somewhere in the world. Comments from numerologists welcome!
37. What one thing would have made your year more satisfying?
Persuading that New York agent that my novel really is the one they've been looking for.
38. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

The people close to me. Jointly and severally, they're wonderful.

The expenses scandal. I could spit vitriol about that for hours. Not only the fact of it, but their entire ATTITUDE to it.

Probably didn't see as much of my Mum as I should.

So on that basis I'd have to go with Terpsis, in Pefkos, on the lovely island of Rhodes. God, how I miss that place.

Letter meme
This came to me from Chris, via Diane. I have to tell you about 10 things I love that start with the letter L. If you want to play along for yourself, leave a comment here and I'll assign you a letter so you can list your own 10 lovely things in your journal and start giving out letters of your own.
So here we go, in the order they occurred to me:
1. Lakes
Whether it's "The Lakes" - where we'll be spending a week with mates around the last bank holiday in May - or Lake Ontario - or any other large inland body of water, I love 'em. Even a reservoir has some of the attraction, if it's been landscaped.
2. Licorice
Not too keen on licorice allsorts, which tend to be too sweet, but I love the plain black stuff and the red stringy stuff is even better!
3. Love
It makes the world go round, you can't live without it, and the more you give it out the more you get back. I love the feeling of being in love, I love the company of loved ones. Lovely.
4. Legs
Some men are said to be "tit men" while others claim to be "bum men." I'm a leg man. A shapely leg, a glimpse of thigh as a skirt sways or parts, that tantalising shadow as legs are crossed and uncrossed. All will always set my pulse racing. Bare, for preference, and definitely none o' them nasty tights thengyoberrymuds.
5. Lightning
I could sit and watch it for hours, as well as the accompanying torrential rain and cracking thunderclaps. Nature's raw power. God's firework display. Dangerous, exciting, unpredictable.
6. Leaves
Swishing through the fallen ones in autumn, breathing in the heady scent of sweet decay, or listening to the wind through them, or watching the different shades of green flash and twist as they blow about. The smell of fresh rain on them. The multitude of shapes, sizes and colours. And, if you want to get technical, their bountiful offering of oxygen. There's a lot to like about leaves.
7. Laughter
I love to lie on my back and make myself laugh, but even more I like to laugh uncontrollably, helplessly, tear-rollingly, side-splittingly, until I gasp for breath. And even more than either of those, I love to make other people laugh. It can lighten your load, help your day move faster through its boring bits, and oil the wheels of friendship.
8. Lazy Sunday Afternoons
Sundays can be boring, but when you hit that sweet spot on a Sunday afternoon, when nothing needs doing and you can please yourself, and no-one will mind if you read a book, listen to some sounds, watch a movie or just have a nap, and there's the traditional English summer sounds of lawnmowers in the distant background and fat bees humming over the hollyhocks; that's when Sundays can be perfect.
9. Legends
I've always felt a particular affinity for the Arthurian legend, but legends in general intrigue and fascinate me.
10. Lindos
A bit of a cheat this one, because my favourite holiday spot is Pefkos, which is about 5km further south on Rhodes, but Lindos is a pretty little town and we've had some great times there, so it's not a total cheat.
So here we go, in the order they occurred to me:
1. Lakes
Whether it's "The Lakes" - where we'll be spending a week with mates around the last bank holiday in May - or Lake Ontario - or any other large inland body of water, I love 'em. Even a reservoir has some of the attraction, if it's been landscaped.
2. Licorice
Not too keen on licorice allsorts, which tend to be too sweet, but I love the plain black stuff and the red stringy stuff is even better!
3. Love
It makes the world go round, you can't live without it, and the more you give it out the more you get back. I love the feeling of being in love, I love the company of loved ones. Lovely.
4. Legs
Some men are said to be "tit men" while others claim to be "bum men." I'm a leg man. A shapely leg, a glimpse of thigh as a skirt sways or parts, that tantalising shadow as legs are crossed and uncrossed. All will always set my pulse racing. Bare, for preference, and definitely none o' them nasty tights thengyoberrymuds.
5. Lightning
I could sit and watch it for hours, as well as the accompanying torrential rain and cracking thunderclaps. Nature's raw power. God's firework display. Dangerous, exciting, unpredictable.
6. Leaves
Swishing through the fallen ones in autumn, breathing in the heady scent of sweet decay, or listening to the wind through them, or watching the different shades of green flash and twist as they blow about. The smell of fresh rain on them. The multitude of shapes, sizes and colours. And, if you want to get technical, their bountiful offering of oxygen. There's a lot to like about leaves.

I just had to try this - and so will you
We helped our friend Annie move house yesterday evening. The first thing you think when you walk into her new place is: "Wow!" Then the next thing you think is: "Wow!!" I remember thinking Wow on at least six separate occasions as she showed us round. The place is huge. And I mean, HUGE. So pleased for her - after a succession of places that she *thought* were places where she could feel settled and make a home, but which turned out to be turkeys of one flavour or another (most of them, it has to be said, turkey flavoured), this finally looks like somewhere she'll be staying for a long time to come.
I hope so, cos I don't fancy moving all THAT junk again any time soon! (*joke!*)
Anyhow we had a blast moving her, the nine of us. Two at the new place organising where everything went, three at the old place deconstructing, bagging up and fetching downstairs, and four of us loading cars, driving between, unloading cars and driving back (repeat until finished). Got more-or-less the whole lot done in under two hours when Annie decided the rest could wait until today cos she'd had enough. Then it was back to the new place for beer, pizza and matey chats. What a great way to spend an evening. Good friends, good company, and the feeling that you've accomplished something to help a mate. Top stuff.
Oh, yes. That thing I just had to try? It's amazing the random stuff you find on tvor's journal, but this is randomer than most:
